Since you're going to recover data from the external hard drive, run EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard and under the External Devices tab, choose the exact drive where you lost data. If you boot up and your external drive is disconnected or unavailable (or in the case of an HDD not spinning yet) the Mac just waits for it to become available. It then boots up. If it never becomes available, the Mac just sits there.

The default setting seems to be let windows manage the power mode. Affordable 3d cad for mac. I guess that means that when windows puts my computer to sleep the seagate goes to sleep too?

Let it sitting there and windows puts it into sleep mode when my pc is in sleep mode? There seems to be no way for me to know it's in sleep mode. Or would you unplug it from the wall if your not going to use it for 1-2 months?

That one had an on-off button. I have several external hard drives, some I built myself, others that I've purchased.
All of my external drive enclosures are fanless (no cooling fan). As a result, the drive inside gets rather warm when left on for extended periods. In my case, I turn off the drives when they're not being used. My recommendation would be to unplug the drive when it's not being used, particularly if it's used very infrequently (once or twice a month).
