Hello, I am currently running Lion 10.7.5 on my early 2011 Macbook Pro. I mainly wish to upgrade because the browser I use (Firefox) does not support Lion anymore (otherwise everything else works fine although a bit slowly). I have done a bit of research but I am still unsure which OS I should update to (I only have 4Go of RAM). It seems that currently only Sierra is available for download? Is there any way I can upgrade to one of the older OS (I don't mind paying for it) and which one do you think would be best for my Mac? Thanks a lot. I have the Late 2011 i7 Macbook Pro and I found that I needed to upgrade my RAM to its max (16GB in my case) and I also needed to replace my rotational disk with an SSD to get good performance when I upgraded to Mavericks and later El Capitan (I'm waiting for a few.point releases before going to Sierra).
If you want to try Sierra, you can backup your system (2 copies with 2 different backup utilities would be even better), then repartition your boot disk to get a 30-50GB partition where you can install Sierra for testing. That would tell you if you need to add more RAM or if replace the disk with an SSD. NOTE: DO NOT spend money on upgrades if the costs are only going to extend the life of this system for a short period of time. Better to keep the money for a new Mac which will give you all of the hardware upgrades, and more. Another way to 'Maybe' get Mavericks, Yosemite, or El Capitan is to make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple store and ask them to install of of those version (it is best to have a valid reason, such as software compatibility).

In the future, download a copy of each major OS release so that you will then have that version of the OS in your App Store -> Purchases tab, which you will then be allowed to download again in the future. When downloading a Major macOS release, as soon as it starts the install, you just 'Quit' the installer. You can either keep the downloaded Applications -> Install macOS Sierra (or similar name for future releases), save it somewhere else, or delete it and get it again from the App Store -> Purchases tab. That way you have the option to decide what version you are going to run.
